Amazing! As expected. When you said “I made that! With my hands!” This is literally how I feel after every crochet project haha. The zero skills hobbies video you recommended is so cool, it wasn’t the usual list of hobbies. I also loved what you said about how it’s much better to spend your time doing things that bring you joy than being on social media comparing yourself to others or just feeling horrible inside. Thank you for this <3
Yes!!! I'm literally never bored. There's always something to read, make, or do. It boggles my mind when someone says they're bored. I don't think of boredom as something terrible, I think of it as 'great, what fun thing can I find to do now?' I will literally hunt around the house for things to do. I once found an old-fashioned flower fairy colouring book and decided to draw the outlines in black pen - the results were quite stunning. I also pick up interesting things at charity shops... a puzzle, a card-making kit and a soap-making kit are some of my latest finds!
me too!! i always have a long list of things to do it's wild that people can just stare at their phones all day, there's so much out there, even just inside your home! also a soap-making kit?? the charity shops in my area need to up their game. and the colouring book sounds lovely :')
I can certainly stare at my phone all day 😅 but hobbies are a great way to NOT do that... Trying to spend more time on hobbies is a big help in reducing my screen time!
I love this! Reminds me to go back to the things I used to enjoy doing as a child. I also picked up embroidery last year to help me get out of my head (chronic overthinker here 👋) and this helped a lot with my mental health. Thanks for the reminder ❤️
ooh embroidery I'm jealous that's such a good one and yes it's the perfect way to calm the mind as well damn i should have added a mental health bit in my essay haha
Crochet is so fun! It replaces scrolling really well. I keep my current project in my living room so I can grab it whenever I have 5 minutes (waiting for my food to be ready, my partner to get dressed, etc)
I totally share your opinion on hobbies, they're the best!
yess I'm so happy i found crocheting :') especially when you have big projects to complete! what are you making at the moment? thank you sm for reading🫶🏾
Reaching for your phone is such a habit to break. Scrolling mindlessly on TikTok and all the other platforms is a distraction to life. I have to totally delete the apps from my phone.
I’m so relaxed when I engage in hobbies like gardening, photography, writing, yoga, and crafting. If I go long stretches of not creating, well I’m tense. Also, not looking at your phone immediately upon waking up really grounds you to the your world instead of consuming the energy of social media and the news.
Another hobby of mine is sending cards to family and friends.
those are such lovely hobbies, I'm glad you found them! I think it's even an amazing thing to know ourselves well enough to know our favourite hobbies in the first place. also sending cards is really cute!
Hobbies are such a source of joy for me too! I try to go into them without any formal goals or structure but just keeping a loose reminder to incorporate some of them into every week, and it makes it all feel like play. Some of my favorites are playing tennis, taking language classes & writing classes, writing, hikes/nature walks, and reading fiction. Plus, I resonate with hobbies feeling like a cure to loneliness — I find I really like the kinds of people I meet when practicing my hobbies ✨
yes definitely not turning then into something formal that you have to do, they're an escape from that. wow i think we'd get along pretty well your hobbies are basically all of mine haha also ou've inspired me to find a writing class! I'm glad you enjoyed this one thank you for reading🩷🩷
My phone broke in November and when I got a new one I didn't redownload IG. No regrets. In my free time now I am either writing reading or resting. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Ironically, I got a notification about my (disappointingly high) screen time average while reading this… Thank you for writing this really thoughtful piece, you’ve really inspired me to get back to put effort into reigniting my love for painting and music 💕
you definitely should it's so fun! i found making book sleeves to be quite easy to follow so perhaps you could start there? (definitely not granny squares idk what people are on when they say start there lol) also greyscale is a really good tip!🩷
