Thank you for this piece, Candice! While reading your quotes of your mother I could definitely hear my Caribbean mother’s voice and attitude coming through as well😂. I agree that the root of our problem is that we are rooting our lives in the digital world rather than the physical. However, when the expectation is to be more grounded in the digital world, how can we build tangible communities among peers?
thank you for reading! hahah I'm so glad you feel my caribbean struggle. it's really hard but im hoping as the move away from social media and all things tech gets bigger we can work it out together!
I was literally planning on writing on my social media journey next month (but I’ve moved that post to August). I spent 2017-2023 gradually deleting and letting go of social media accounts. I don’t have Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram and although I have a TikTok account, I never use it because I don’t have the app on my phone–it’s too distracting for me. And I feel as if I have way more space in my life. Every time I tell people I’m not on social media, they’re always shocked and ask me what I do with my time and I’ve started telling them I live life.
ooh i want to read that! and wow that's so funny but also kind of sad that people ask what you do with your time without socials as if there aren't thousands of things to do!! saying you live life is such a good response I'm going to start doing this too haha
I loved every part of this ❤️ I deleted Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok yesterday and I already feel better. I've spent so much more time developing my hobbies (and considering trying sewing/cosplaying). I no longer want to be "in the know" about everything in the world rn.
I'm so happy for you!! it gets so much better from here🩷 and what wonderful hobbies you're about to get into! i think we should bring back the head empty era and just enjoy ourselves tbh
I am absolutely with you on this, Candice! I have deleted Instagram and Tiktok from my phone and it is SO lovely. I've also gone one step further and blocked the Daily Mail website from my mobile website browser. It's so freeing being blissfully unaware of everything that's happening ALL at once and having control over when and what I digest.
blocking the daily mail is such a mood. I'm so happy for you! yes! blissful unawareness is what I'm now striving for haha thank you for reading jess :')
