Yes!!! Burn the institutions!!!! But for now, use the institutions to help you find the most fulfilling and peaceful life within a system destined to be unfulfilling and not peaceful!!!!!

Yes I completely agree!!! I enjoy my full time job but I would never want my passions to become my job, because in doing so I think they would stop being my passions.

The thing is in the book 'what is art' by Tolstoy, he also describes the future artist shall be working class people who not just idled around art, but also the lives of common man. He sees pure art path is detrimental to its intelligibility, and ended up as the product to satisfy the perverse taste of noble class.

I love this! Thank you for writing this. I feel like I have been struggling lately with this a lot. It still makes me sad that so many of us seem to dislike our jobs when they take up so much of our time (and I still don’t like being tied to my laptop haha) but I like this idea of parallel careers - the reframing of our jobs being the means to allow us to pursue what we want to without financial worry. I will definitely have to check this book out! :)

thank you for reading! yes definitely, it's a sad truth but i think looking at our jobs through a different lens can be the first step until we hopefully get to a place where this isn't the standard anymore, and with the rise of content creators and creating streams of revenue online, we may be getting a little closer! it's a great book overall, i definitely recommend <3

You might like the concept of a portfolio career, if you haven't heard of that already. It's similar in having different facets to your career and some of them could be unpaid.

I've always had a similar mindset about work haha. I do think it's far too normalised in society for people to hate their job, considering how much of our lives our jobs take up. But the idea of a "parallel career" is definitely an interesting concept! I've seen that book at the store before but didn't give it much notice, but now I think I might just have to give it a read :)

it's way too normalised and it makes me so sad. but I'm glad you find it interesting too! I'm on the fourth story in the book now and there is more talk about the perceptions of work so the whole book is really making you think and I love it so you should definitely read it too!

What a beautiful realization! I’ve always felt that while living in a system that only values profit, it’s best to leave my passions as “parallel” careers so I don’t end up getting burned out. I’ll be using the term going forward!

I finished reading What You’re Looking for is in the Library last month and loved it! It gave me so much to think about concerning work, creativity, dreams. Are you done reading it? What was your favourite story? And if you enjoyed it, you might like Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo-reum.
